6 TO 8 WEEKS POST-OP

DUGOUT CANOE OMETEPE ISLAND
At my recent 6 week check-up I'd asked my oncologist whether I was over the worst regarding any potential side effects from the radiation, although my logic told me...."probably not"?
Her response was immediate .........nope ,the worst was yet to come and would probably deteriorate somewhat until month 4 (18 weeks) and hopefully then tail off and eventually fade into distant memory over a period of as much as a year or two.
I'd thought I'd dodged the bullet and was gonna get away with what,to date ,had been minor symptoms involving slightly more frequent urinary habits (I was already down to once/night during this period).
PANAMA CANAL

Well she was right and it was only around week 7/8 where I began to have a bit of burning on urination.
Totally manageable and with a reasonable flow (still no meds).
I'd also started to feel a little more fatigued than normal when playing squash or jogging in the mountain.
My hips felt like I'd been climbing a mountain or two when I hadn't done more than a bit of jogging on the treadmill.

No big deal......I just took it a bit easier ,but continued with a similar regime as I've been used to.

I'd been missing my red wine by now ,but it just wasn't worth the effort as it obviously would have

an effect if I landed up going to sleep with my bladder full of alcohol!

Solution...........start drinking earlier and mix it up with glasses of water....then ,at 6pm ,stop drinking altogether.
The amount of alcohol consumed however has been minimal...till now!

I'm in week 9/10 now ,which included the festive period where I couldn't resist a bit of red wine (well maybe a little more than "a bit") and have just recently (past few days) had a pretty strong burning sensation when peeing and a slightly weaker flow.
Back to my normal routine now and the burning has subsided a bit and isn't really bothering me.Radiation takes some time to have an effect on the healthy cells but will inevitably affect those in close proximity to some degree.

However, unlike cancer cells which cannot regenerate once "nuked",healthy cells can and should recover from any incidental "burning"resulting from exposure. At this point ,after 70 days the radiation potency will have dropped off to less than half of the original dose ,but any damage from that original stronger radiation will manifest itself around this stage.

  1. Well, I take on this challenge - nobody congratulated you for a splendid blog. Here we go. You did a fine job, your travel experiences make me drool. As one says: the one who travels has a story to tell. So, you exposing yourself to other cultures and peoples enlarges your 'inner world' but also opens up us , the readers of your blog. This then is a massive enrichment for all of us, thank you Tony. Your description and reliving your prostate experience is phenomenal. There is a great need for all guys out there to understand the subject and drop any preconceived ideas or playing 'coy' - this is a journey of 'choosing life'. Well done Tony.

  2. I posted the above comment on behalf of a good friend of mine who had no way of commenting (one apparently has to have a google a/c?)

  3. Dear Tony,

You are spearheading the prostate awareness campaign. This you have done, so far, on a person to person level. Maybe it goes 'viral' when the male puplic recognizes the seriousness of prostate cancer (it is reported that 80% of men will have prostate cancer by the time they reach their 80th birthday). This means that four out of five guys will have prostate cancer - "are you next in line?" Guys will only open up when they overcome the shyness of exposing their fear of 'dimished manhood'. This is a cultural problem in that many guys equate manhood with 'sexual performance'. It is an ego problem. Guys contradict themselves if they ignore the 'prostate issue': - having prostate cancer is the best way to loose their 'sexual performance' for ever. Therefore, the best course of action, and that means being a real man, is to take on the responsibility to make sure that their prostate is in good shape by checking their PSA levels and working together with their GP or urologist.

I mentioned to you on the phone this morning that I will add further thoughts:

Why does cancer develop in the first place?
    • Many explanations are offered - such as from the Mayo clinic: Gene mutations that occur after birth. Most gene mutations occur after you're born and aren't inherited. A number of forces can cause gene mutations, such as smoking, radiation, viruses, cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens), obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation and a lack of exercise.
    • All living organism have the built in ability to repair damage: wounds heal, broken bones mend, digestive disorders rectify themselves by watching what one eats. The body is constantly in a state of healing, 24/7 - otherwise we would not be able to live. When the body is no longer able to carry out the daily healing tasks chronic illness will build up (prostate cancer is one of them) which will develop into irreversible pathologies requiring medical, surgical intervention or other intervetions. But, such interventions will not be able to restore the body to its earlier healthy state - the earlier built healing capacity is no longer available.
    • It is nowadays very common that people are not in full possession of their built in healing capacities - even children are afflicted. There are many ways to help the body to regain its inherent healing capacity and it is advisable to maintain this healing capacity already from the beginning of life.
    • Homoeopathy is a tool to enhance the inate healing capacity, thus curtailing the development of chronic diseases.
    • An additional tool for diagnosis and monitoring cancer is available: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19138839
See what you make of the above
